USC Baseball Batter's Eye at Great Park
MLB and NCAA baseball games require a "batter's eye" in every stadium. A batter's eye is essentially a giant black "box" that creates contrast with the bright white baseball after a pitcher throws it. This helps hitters easily track the ball after it leaves the pitcher's hand. (Next time you go to a college or pro baseball game, look out into center field. You'll see an unused dark area there—often cleverly woven into the aesthetics of the stadium.)
In 2024, the University of Southern California played their home games at Great Park in Irvine while awaiting the construction of a new, permanent stadium. This gave PCE a chance to design and implement a temporary batter's eye that the team could use at its 2024 home. This unconventional project let us build and deploy a truss structure in a whole new way!
