We built a concert venue! Great Park Live is a massive, outdoor event space that officially opened its doors at Great Park in Irvine in June 2024. PCE worked with our good friends at PSQ Productions to design and build this incredible venue, which will play host to countless concerts, screenings, and other shows over the next few years (check out the current event schedule at greatparklive.com).
The PCE team worked overtime for months to bring this project—one of the biggest in company history—to life, and we're super proud of the result. To build Great Park Live, we used top-of-the-line production equipment across the board, from video walls and rigging to the state-of-the-art EAW sound system. For a quick look at the construction process and a handy gear rundown, check out the video below.
In April 2024, PCE supplied a massive rental package to Awaken Church for the EMERGE Men's Conference outside San Diego. This event brings Awaken Church's male parishioners from near and far together for a weekend of celebration, brotherhood, worship, and leadership training. A massive tent serves as the nucleus for the event, and PCE helped transform that tent into a production powerhouse.
Inside the tent, PCE built the event's mainstage, a theater-in-the-round style truss box with video walls, audio, and lighting on both sides. Further out into the crowd, PCE built two truss structures to fly additional video walls, audio, and lighting. This gave Awaken Church the ability to use the tent for a variety of purposes: live music, speakers, games/competitions, and video playback.
The annual CHOC (Children's Hospital of Orange County) Gala is one of the largest private charity events anywhere in the world, and PCE has had the immense pleasure of producing the event every year since 2015. The CHOC Gala consists of a red carpet walk, cocktail hour, dinner, charity auction, and a night-capping concert. Past performers at the gala include John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Lionel Richie, Gwen Stefani, and Earth, Wind & Fire.
In terms of production, PCE pulls out all the stops for the CHOC Gala. The show gets our best gear across every product line. At the 2024 iteration of the event (which featured headliner Gwen Stefani), our lighting fixtures included the brand new Chauvet Maverick Storm 3 BeamWash and Chauvet Color STRIKE M, among others. EAW ADAPTive System Anya line array speakers flanked either side of the massive Mobile Stage. A PCE camera crew captured the action with Blackmagic Ursa Broadcast G2 cameras, displaying the show on massive LED video walls.
PCE is no stranger to theatrical productions, but the live puppet improv show Puppet Up! Uncensored offers some unique challenges. This ribald creation from Brian Henson and Henson Alternative uses cameras, bluescreens, and live video effects to create a Muppets-style show for a live audience. Because the performers stand in front of the audience on stage, viewers can choose to split their attention between the human puppeteers and the "final" live video feed the performers (and a team of behind-the-scenes PCE technicians) work together to create.
We've supported the show for about a decade, offering lighting, rigging, audio, video, and our advanced effects expertise to bring some of the show's wilder ideas to life. With live keying and a recurring segment that involves an elaborate live cloning effect (featured on Adam Savage's Tested), the show keeps us on our toes night in and night out.
In October 2023, PCE dug in for a major production at the OC Fairgrounds: the Orange County Sustainability Decathlon. The Orange County Sustainability Decathlon is a one-of-a-kind student competition. In it, university teams from Southern California and beyond design and build functioning solar-powered homes. Each home aims to address both climate change and modern housing challenges.
The Orange County Sustainability Decathlon includes a main stage in the fairgrounds Promenade building and an outdoor sustainable village consisting of the student-built houses. The main stage included many live event production staples: staging, rigging, video walls, lighting, line array speakers, etc., all of which falls within PCE's regular purview. The sustainable village, however, offered a more unique challenge. PCE connected the student homes to the power grid (where they added energy) and provided internet throughout the grounds. Participating in such a unique event and seeing so many brilliant young minds at work was a true thrill for the PCE team.
Every year, the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Expo brings all the major players in the music industry to Southern California for a massive, no-holds-barred convention. The Expo features a show floor with vendor booths (including instrument manufacturers, audio equipment manufacturers, lighting companies, etc.), and the greater NAMM campus includes numerous performance stages. During the 2023 show, PCE provided production in both of these areas.
The Yamaha Main Stage (which saw performances by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Lawrence, and Jamison Ross) was built and lit by PCE. When putting on a show for industry experts, it's important to get the details right. We stand by our work, and once you see our NAMM event video (below), we think you'll agree!
Inside the convention center, PCE provided lighting for the EAW booth. Our package helped EAW highlight (quite literally) the audio equipment EAW chose to demonstrate during NAMM.
In 2023, PCE helped bring the Seaside Equestrian Tour to the Del Mar Fairgrounds for the first time. A series of horsemanship competitions spread out over a multi-month window, the tour also featured a Saturday night concert series.
Before the Seaside Equestrian Tour began, PCE installed a brand new, permanent sound system at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. A necessity for the tour, this system will also make a major difference for all future events held at the grounds. A PCE lighting package helped light the arena for the competitions themselves, and for the Saturday night concert series.
The North American leg of Professor Brian Cox's 2022 Horizons tour consisted of 34 shows in the US and Canada. Over the course of 8 weeks, Brian Cox hit city after city, mesmerizing audiences with cutting edge visuals and mind-blowing science. (The tour even included a couple nights at the legendary Beacon Theatre on Broadway in New York City!) PCE supplied audio, lighting, and LED video wall support for every one of the tour's stops. In this video, tour producer Arnold Engelman and PCE CEO Ryan Steidinger talk about some of the challenges and triumphs of the tour.
PCE's contributions consisted of a massive LED video wall (made up of Absen PL 3.9 panels), audio, and lighting. A Disguise VX4 media server tied everything together, allowing the good professor to control the show and easily move from one set of visual effects to another. "I look at working with PCE not as a supplier, but as a production partner," said tour producer Arnold Engelman. "They have a vested interest in the project themselves."
